The koi fish represents overcoming obstacles, courage, and the ability to attain high goals. Other says it also stands for good fortune or luck.

A Japanese legend states that if a koi fish succeeds in climbing the falls of Dragon Gate on the Yellow River it would be transformed into a dragon.

In Buddhism, the koi fish represents courage. Just like a fish swims through water, humans "swim" through the "ocean of suffering."

I used a lot of references that weren't real. Paintings of koi fish, tattoos, et cetera but no actual pictures of koi fish. I really wanted to incorporate my own artistic vision. So it doesn't look completely like a koi fish, but I tried my best.
